Full Version: Best Deathmetal Guitarist Ever?
The Tomb > Vile Pleasures > Vomit The Soul > The Woodshed
Ankan
We have our best bassist ever and best drummer ever threads, figured I could go make this one as well. I won't include any CC members because they would obviously win easily. If you can come up with anyone I've forgotten, simply put other, and say who you think of.
Vile Suffering
azagoth \m/
Ira Tenax 666
the Hoffman Brothers from Deicide
moelll
Chuck Schuldiner

he was such a great guitarist
Demonic Reign

ill second that deicide2.gif
Ankan
The Hoffmans are good, but not as good as anyone on that list.
Epidemic_Madness
I voted Masvidal just because of his name, nah smile.gif

hell yeah they are dude, probably better... dude on Scars of the Crucifix they fuckin shred neo classical style, its amazing
Ankan
They are amazing indeed, but dude, how many of those guys on the list have you heard?

It was very hard for me to pick one, but I voted Erik Rutan of Hate Eternal and MA. Masvidal is the most technical of em all, but Rutan is faster. Trey and Chuck are great because they've got such personal styles noone is able to copy. Well, Masvidal also does, on second thought...noone else would be able to play what he plays. And Dave Suzuki also shreds neoclassical style on Dechristianize. Andy is on there because his solos just kick ass, and Karl Sanders from Nile is great as well...listen to the solos in Cast Down The Heretic.

I personally don't think the Hoffmans are as good as any of these guys.
Epidemic_Madness
agree with ankan
warior 13
I picked Trey Azagthoth, but Karl Sanders is a close second.
Vile Suffering
If i could i'de add gallagher of fetus. His riffs are awesome and his solos rule. Not to mention the vokills.
Mick Bynes
Chuck Schuldiner
SufferInTruth
Dallas Toler-Wade.
EYEHATEGOD
ankan is wise......i picked azagthoth with erik rutan a very close second
SufferInTruth
eyehategod, when you see Nile live, you'd best be watching Dallas when they play Burning Pits Of The Duat.
EYEHATEGOD
ok i shall do

hoffmans owned they're sweet, deicide will probably blow without them now that they have jack owen too who in my humble opinion sucksss but he did write festering in the crypt, one of my all time favoritas. but i voted chuck, watching the live footage that came with my sound of perserverance dvd and the live in LA cd, that all fucking owns, he is an epitome of incredibleness on the guitar. but most of the guys on this list arent nearly as good as some of the classics, like jimmy page, jimi hendrix, eddie VH... although i will probably be beaten for saying so. i never liked azagoth. guitar synths are for pussies. yucky.gif
Vile Suffering
azagoth
Owen
john gallagher
BleedForMyPain
Trey Azagthoth devil.gif
Ankan
Ok, I gotta restate my opinion. Dallas Toler-Wade is the best fuckin death metal guitarist I've seen so far. Trey and Chuck rule because they have their own styles, but Dallas is just...insane.

Corpse, I don't think you can compare those guys, neither of them would be able to play what the other plays. The guitarists you mentioned where great inventors, but those on the list are the guys that took it to the next level.

And the edit: The Hoffmans are too fucking overrated...they never did anything special, all the guys on the list kicks their ass. Even I am about as good as they are.
POUNDED-INTO-DUST
Chuck Schuldiner. He has such an amazing playing style. Some of it sounds arabian somewhat (you guys might not hear it) but at the same time it sounds evil and heavy. One of my top 5 guitar players definetely. I would have picked Trey, but his solos on the first 2 albums were kind of lackluster.

Yeah but Jack is a badass lead player. I gotta give him that.
Fragmented
I would have to agree on the Dallas part, except I like Karl more.

No disrespect to Dallas, of course, but Karl is widely versed in Midldle-Eastern music, plus he plays the baglama saz.

Although, to be honest, if we're just talking about death metal guitarists, I'd say Karl and Dallas are my favorites. Period.
Rotting Decrepit Corpse
i voted for chuck .... spiritual healing is probably the most important album in
death metal history....

a classic , and chuck was very unique....

james murphy was fucking badass as well...
CHRIS FROM MD

I voted other because you forgot to add John Gallagher of Dying Fetus great guitar player & vocals plus in the early days not a bad drummer too.
Brewtal
Chuck is my choice. His music is simple but technical and very intresting at the same time. But if we talk skill, I'd chose Mohammad from necrophagist.
Devourer_Of_Vaginal_Skin
Dave Suzuki gets my vote because I LOVE his solos on Dechristianize.... they fucking rule. Chuck Schuldiner is at a close 2nd. Still I must say it's kind of hard to compare the two..... since both of these guys kick MASSIVE amounts of ass.

R.I.P. Chuck
Vile Suffering
trey azagoth or pat o brian
Rotting Decrepit Corpse
james murphy....... what do you think of him..?
Vile Suffering
im charlie murphy bitch! show me them titties!
Rotting Decrepit Corpse
ohhhhhhhhhhhh fuck
Ankan
James Murphy is the fucking man, love his solos in Death and Testament. Could have added him, when I think about it. And yeah, Mohammad is a fuckin monster too, to sing while playing those riffs is unbelievable. I guess I just dont really like Necrophagist.

Another guy worth a mention is Daniel Mongrain of Capharnaum and Martyr, those solos are fuckin wicked, plus he plays rhythm like few others.
Spine Splitter
I have to pick Trey he has a unique style. His work also seems to improve on each cd. Truth is all the ones listed on the poll are good. buckets of blood for all. spooky.gif
Rotting Decrepit Corpse
ok , James murphy should be added to the list .........

yes his playing with testament was most deadly , on the

low album .............\m/

Thrones of Blood
lol there is no way in HELL I could pick just one, cause they all have their own style that I like. My fav DM guitarists are Chuck, James Murphy, Trey, and shitloads of others....
Rotting Decrepit Corpse
death metal - mohammad from necrophagist and the otherguy he plays with , the blond swedish looking dude ..... amazing
Devourer_Of_Vaginal_Skin
At the moment Pat from CC gets my vote. I love "Infinite Misery" off of Kill.... that song and solo from that song fucking OWN.

but from the list Trey Azagthoth of course..[=
MORBID ANGEL pureeeeeee domination

gahhh i love chuck ttoo but..oh well
Thrones of Blood
Chuck Schuldiner. Bitch.
mutationofthecadaver
i have to agree about chuck schuldiner. he will always stand out in the forefront as far as guitarist go for me. singing and playing that. i don't get it. i struggle playing simple metal rhythms and screaming, but wow. he blew me away the first time i saw that dvd at my friend's house.

but, truly necrophagist has some talented guitarists, too.

NOW you're just talking crazy.
DeadbyDawn
All the guys listed on the poll are undeniably fantastic players in their own ways, though I gotta admit that I'm definitely not overly crazy about all of them, especially guys like Sanders, LaRoque, or even Schuldiner, to an extent.

I had to vote Other and that special one is Doug Cerrito. Though of those listed, I'd probably vote for Trey Azagthoth.
maggotgrinder
I picked Trey Azagthoth simply because morbid angel were one of the first death metal bands that I got into. Besides CC,deicide, and cryptopsy.
vivalaranter
Alright, I'll be the first to say it - Laroque

Souless
I had to vote other cuz i think Terrance Hobbs (suffocation) is one of the best in the bizz out there...

I think the second guitarist on Them and Conspiracy is pretty underrated too. His solos were great. Too bad he had to be all druggy, or he could have stuck around for some bigger and better albums later on.

Individual thought patterns is my fave Death album because of Andy LaRoque. He has some amazing technique dude.

Especially on Them. Best King Diamond album for sure, most creative.
