Full Version: Butchered At Birth
The Tomb > Beyond The Cemetery > Cannibal Corpse News > Cannibal Corpse - Butchered At Birth

IMO Butchered at birth is intense.

It features alot of graphic lyric of the dismembering of body parts...Raping of dead babies and then tieing them upside down and watching them rot....It's very good.

But is it the best album they have made?
In fact- is this the best DM album off all time in the 90's?

Give me your thoughts mates I got your backs wink.gif
Rotting Decrepit Corpse
unlike this thread , its good
Mutilated1
I dont think its the best album they made by a long shot. Butchered at Birth has got some awesome riffs, beats, and growls and its certainly brutal but the songwriting is lacking compared to the stuff they wrote that came later. I kind of feel like Butchered at Birth had all the ingredients, but they just didn't really have the songwriting experience to put it all together in a perfect cohesive unit at that point in their careers.

In fact Butchered At Birth was the first Cannibal Corpse album I was ever exposed to. The first time someone played it for me I remember being intrigued by the artwork on the CD but when they played the first song "Meathook Sodomy" I totally didn't get it - all the weird guitar sounds and sub guttural gurgling noises Chris was making and I was like "What the fuck is this ? Noise ?" It was several years later before I ever listened to it again and I finally "Got it" and understood how ground breaking it was.

Its a great album, and I love the sounds on it and how its recorded. The riffs are really cool, Chris vocals are great, and the beats are devastating - but the thing in my opinion that its lacking is the songwriting and the ability to pull all the parts together and make the song really unique and standout - in my opinion that is something that didn't really show up in their work until Tomb of The Mutilated or even more so in The Bleeding.

tronics
John - I can barely read your text with that new background art.

And yeah BAB is brutal but not the best DM album of the 90's. That honour goes to either Konkhra - Weed Out The Weak, Abramelin self titled, Skinless - Progression Towards Evil, or Damaged - Token Remedies Research.
Necrosadistic
flawless cd, one of the best of the 90's no doubt, plus bab beats the shit outta the stuff nowadays, still.
DeadbyDawn
As much as I absolutely adore Bab, to call it, indeed any individual dm classic album, "the all-time best dm album of the '90s" is a seriously tall claim. wink.gif smile.gif

HOWEVER, despite the likes of Suffo, Deicide, Disgorge, Immo, Skinless, Dying Fetus and a bevy of other legends that made the decade of the '90s death metal's outright peak of power and glory, and bands that are clamouring for my soul as I write this, BaB is a really special sentimental favourite of mine...So, what the heck, it won't hurt my feelings one bit to say yeah, it's the best of the nineties.. smile.gif
Thrones of Blood
I was never a big fan of BaB.

Yeah it was a individual album of course and what mutilated said was spot on.
Yeah maybe it wasn't the best in some opinions and also what mutilated said about it lacking songwriting is also correct but thus making it show their potential in their music;

Thus allowing them to create such master pieces like The Bleeding and Vile (the more ya listen to vile the more you like) and they are still kicking arse to this day with announcements of their upcoming album that is under construction.
But guys the thing i wanted to point out was said........................
"The CD was individual"

Reason- Not many people really wrote about ripping peoples heads off and feeding on fungus and pus from wounds back in the 90's now did they?
That's what makes it unique!!!

Weather they be belching growls...or singing opera its still death metal its still brutal and its still the best cc album IMO besides kill vile bleeding- and will still be a big part of our mp3 collection for years to come.
Therefore I conclude this as my first detailed post rofl.
Devourer_Of_Vaginal_Skin
IMO sadly BAB is not the best CC album. That honour would have to go to "The Bleeding" (for the Barnes era) and to "Gore Obsessed" (for the Fisher era). To be perfectly honest, BAB is is the 2nd CC album that I listen to the least, besides "Eaten." Out of the 9 tracks on BAB, I only really listen to 4 of them. The rest, sound very repetitive, dull, and unmemorable.

To call it the greatest DM album of the 90's is a gross exaggeration. I (as well as the rest of us) could think of an assload of other 90's DM albums that destroy it easily. It's a neat album yes, but nothing to blow your load over.

And yes, Butchered at Birth is the best album of the 90s and from Cannibal Corpse. Hail.

Viva, I swear you purposely disagree with me on everything. rolleyes.gif

And yes, Butchered at Birth is the 4th or maybe even 5th best album of the 90s and from Cannibal Corpse. Hail.
FIXED. And yes, Vile far surpasses BAB by about a thousand light years or so.

laugh.gif laugh.gif Vile was made to try and force us all to forget about its true genesis, i.e. Created to Kill AND make the new singer feel warm, safe and welcome aboard the supership that Chris used to front. laugh.gif And seriously, Vile is just flat-out dull and ordinary and could be the worst Fisher-era disc, if it isn't Gallery...BaB, its sheer greatness aside, could surely vie for the 'best dm album' honours, at least for the year 1991, if we leave the entire decade alone. smile.gif

You're making them sound like the name of a certain 70's psych-rock group's bastard DM cousin. cool.gif

Actually your comment reminded me of Jefferson Starship (a byproduct of Jefferson Airplane), but yeah I s'pose the Star-Trek bit works as well. laugh.gif

Hey Devourer, actually you're the one that coined the star to make it Starship when I had really called it a silly old supership, mentally likening this mighty band to a magnificent ocean liner navigating death metal oceans until it struck a reef and sank circa Vile'96.. laugh.gif laugh.gif But yeah, you're spot-on and it's funny how I was actually thinking both Jefferson and Star Trek when I made that reference in my last post. smile.gif

Aye?
Vile wasn't that good? Well I agree with dead dragon partly It was a weak CD but only about 3 songs are listenable.

BTW
Created to kill tomb prolly come second n third with eaten but then again you'd have to put it all in perspective.

Say you made a CD you thought it sounded good.....you would keep you style fresh...but when people are telling you how lame it is (ie vile) you'd wanna change you style.

So you make gore obsessed n gallery and say "Hey I am more melodic now so gimme good comments!"
Then people give you worse comments you say- "Man fuck this shit im going into The Wretched Spawn and I don't give a fuck what anyone says!" then you let it simmer for 5 mins and you get kill!

Having said that this is why I don't really think that negitive comments about one album and good comments about another make alot of sense if the band picks up again and starts sticking the middle finger up and playing their own style.
Cause it defeats the purpose.

If the band wised them selfs up, then the fans should too.

(btw if you can't understand the thread title then go back to grade 2 tongue.gif )
