New York Police Target Cars Entering City
Contributor: Denise Dory
Email: dory@wmar.com

New York City Police want to photograph the license plates of every car coming into the city.

The plan, reported in the New York Times, would have tags photographed and time-stamped at bridges and tunnels entering New York. The cars would also be scanned for radioactivity. The information would be sent to a command center.

Police got the idea from a surveillance system being used in London. It could
be in place in New York by 2010.

after reading what the patriot act sums up, i think Clara was right after all...

The USA PATRIOT Act, commonly known as the Patriot Act, is a controversial Act of Congress that U.S. President George W. Bush signed into law on October 26, 2001. The acronym stands for "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001" (Public Law Pub.L. 107-56).

The act expands the authority of U.S. law enforcement agencies for the stated purpose of fighting terrorism in the United States and abroad. Among its provisions, the Act increases the ability of law enforcement agencies to search telephone, e-mail communications, medical, financial and other records; eases restrictions on foreign intelligence gathering within the United States; expands the Secretary of the Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions, particularly those involving foreign individuals and entities; and enhances the discretion of law enforcement and immigration authorities in detaining and deporting immigrants suspected of terrorism-related acts. The act also expands the definition of terrorism to include domestic terrorism, thus enlarging the number of activities to which the USA Patriot Act’s expanded law enforcement powers can be applied.

now i think if they are scanning cars for radioactivity let alone snapping pics of every plate entering the city....i think that would fall under some kind of terrorism/terrorist plots/activities...hence invoking the patriot act..cuz nobody not involved with terrorism would have reason to be scanned for radioactive shit..unless its godzilla

Hmmmmm I knew what i was talking about with out really knowing for sure now that is what i call uber witty laugh.gif laugh.gif

thank you Dave for your fanatical research capabilities smile.gif

With the amount of people I know personally who traffic drugs out of NYC, I think the outward cars would be more important to photograph.

but wait, there is more story...and i think the first 2 paragraphs alone kinda maybe sorta point directly at the patriot act..the bit in here about TRACKING EVERY VEHICLE is a little on the spooky side...

NYPD's 'Operation Sentinel' To Track EVERYTHING
Radiation Sensors, Surveillance Cameras Used To Screen & Follow Every Vehicle Entering Lower Manhattan

Plan Aims To Provide Security Blanket Against Terrorist Attack
Reporting

Marcia Kramer NEW YORK (CBS) ― It's called "Operation Sentinel" and it proves just how far the NYPD will go to protect this city from terrorists. The plan involves some high-tech tracking that is coming under fire from some groups.

New York City is going to great lengths to make sure that bomb-toting terrorists can't reach us.

"New York City is something special," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday. "It's not just a very big city in this world. It is, in many senses, the iconic city. It represents Western Democracy.

As part of the plan the NYPD is creating a huge buffer zone, working with cops in a 50-mile radius of the city. Officials in New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Long Island are given radiation detectors to stop terrorists as far away from New York City as possible.

Police also plan to track every vehicle that enters Manhattan.

"We're going to be adding cameras as we go forward," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

That part of that plan calls for photographing and scanning license plates of cars and trucks at all bridges and tunnels. Even small ones like the Willis Avenue Bridge will also be used to detect radiation.

"I don't think it's hyperbole to call this Big Brotherish," said Christopher Dunn of the New York Civil Liberties Union. "The New York City Police Department is creating a huge computer database of the movement of everyone in a vehicle in Manhattan."

Civil libertarians take issue with one aspect of that plan – data on each vehicle entering Manhattan would be stored for at least one month. Bloomberg, however, defended the idea.

"It is always a balance between freedoms to come and go between civil liberties and security, and I think we pretty much have the balance pretty much right," Bloomberg said.

The reaction of New Yorkers CBS 2 HD spoke to were mixed.

"I guess I would feel safer in light of everything that happened," said Tavis Rivere of Ridgewood, N.J. "The city has been under a lot of, you know, pressures and stuff."

"It's a violation -- I mean it's ridiculous," said Sharday Hill of Teaneck, N.J. "I don't know want everybody or someone knowing where I'm at 24 hours a day."

The city also intends on putting Lower Manhattan in a so-called "ring of steel," with 3,000 public and private security cameras below Canal Street. There will be 600 cops assigned to protect ground zero.
SHUT UP AND DIE
Ok....now here's my question: if you're not doing anything wrong, why would you be worried about a photograph being taken of your vehicle? I'm not sure if many of you know this, but this is actually something that's extremely common all over America anyways....this is getting press coverage because it's NY. And besides, it doesn't even begin to approach the retardedness that which is the Patriot Act.

well i suppose we all have different definitions of freedom...being photographed all over the place and literally tracked to MYSELF does not qualify as freedom..its nothing more then being reduced to a dog on a leash where your master knows everywhere you are, go and do...(if they so desire)

it has nothing to do with well its not a big deal to me cuz im not doing anything wrong...it has to do with a city, state, country who looks upon everyone as a supposed threat or suspect.

its nothing more then one more notch in the big brother belt. I dont care if it means nothing to you or dont bother you..it does me and im sure alot of other people.

and how do ya figure this has nothing to do with the patriot act? maybe i am confused, the patriot act involves terrorism home and abroad...i think setting up surveillance equipment to photograph and track every single car in your city not to mention radioactivity scans and all that bullshit when they plainly say they are doing it because of terrorism...i dont understand how its not connected? lol
but anyways. debate over as far as i am concerned, we know where we stand on the issue..lol
I think maybe you're putting a bit too much stock in yourself, buddy. laugh.gif What, pray tell, would the government want with you?? It really doesn't affect your freedoms whatsoever, man. If you've ever driven through a major city or hell....even an apartment complex, guess what? You've been photographed or videotaped. It ain't gonna kill ya and if you're doing nothing wrong, it won't make a difference. Are you gonna stop going to corner stores because you're being videotaped? No. Life goes on as usual, good sir.

Ok, now WHY? The government's not going to be like "well....Dave passed through New York....we'll pass his license and vehicle information on to the FBI for further inspection". That's not reality, that's the X-Files, homie.
The Patriot Act has to do with primarily communications, bro: how is your vehicle doing anything with communications? People were originally upset about it because you could track down people's computer records or library records unnecessarily. Unless it has been ammended to MONITORING MOTOR VEHICLES, I believe you're confused. wink.gif

Anyone who has to take yearly training classes to comply with the Patriot Act please raise your hand.

Am I the only one with a hand raised ? Yeah kind of thought so.

This has nothing at all to do with the patriot act.

This is not any different than me getting my picture taken by your security camera if I walk into your store to buy a beer or pump some gas.
SHUT UP AND DIE
Lol....seriously...I don't understand why it's something different the minute the government does it.
