BitterSweet

I want to go respray my yard again this afternoon when it cools off a bit and try and get rid of some more of it. I swear the stuff is soooo hard to kill, it keeps coming back. At least it isnt in the grassy part of my yard so I can walk, work, play there but when I go thru the trees and i have a gazillion trees, its lurkin everywhere and I swear it jumps out and swats me biggrin.gif and bingo I have it again...

I'm highly allergic. Last time I got it (I was probably about 6 years old) it started itching real badly, when I woke up the next morning, my face looked like a red and purple balloon. I couldn't see out of one eye because my face was so swollen. In fact, I couldn't even feel my face. My parents got a picture of it somewhere... I wanna find it. Maybe I'll post it if I do find it and we can all have a laugh.

I've made sure to stay away from poison ivy since then.

I have never gotten into ot, but I am so alergic to everything else I would bet I am. I had a bad reaction to stinging Nettle last year. If you have ever gotten into that you know how bad it hurts.

"""""Rhus plants(poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac) are the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis in the US. Rhus plans contain the potent antigen urushiol, which will sensitize 60% to 80% of the persons who are exposed to it. ...(It) may be carried on the fur of pets, clothing, shoes, toys, tools, or other objects and then transferred to the skin. Approximately 24 to 36 hrs after a sensitized person is exposed to the urushiol, a blistery, itching rash develops. Usually within 15 minutes of contact, the urushiol binds to skin proteins. If it is washed off with soap and water before that time, a reaction may be prevented. After the antigen is fixed, however, it cannot be washed off or transferred to other areas. Scratching or oozing blister fluid cannot spread the antigen to other areas of the body or to other persons. New lesions that appear a few days after the primary lesions represent less sensitive areas or areas where less antigen was deposited, not spreading of the antigen. Because the course of the reaction usually is 12 to 15 days, 2 weeks of medication should be prescribed. Reference [Dermatology in Primary Care 1994] """""

one more fact filled snippit~~

We are not born with a sensitivity to poison ivy. Sensitivity develops after the first direct skin contact with the oil urushiol. An allergic reaction seldom occurs on the first exposure. A second encounter can produce a reaction, which may be severe. About 85 percent of all people will develop an allergic reaction when adequately exposed ot poison ivy.

This sensitivity varies from person to person. People who reach adulthood without becoming sensitive have only a 50 percent chance of developing an allergy to poison ivy. However, do not assume that you are one of the few people who are not sensitive. Only about 15 percent of people seem to be resistant.

Sensitivity to poison ivy tends to decline with age. Children who have reacted to poison ivy will probably find that their sensitivity decreases by half by young adulthood without repeated exposure. People who were once allergic to poison ivy may even lose their sensitivity later in life.

One of my friends is HORRIBLY allergic, and speaking about that, right now his body is basically covered in it from moving wood around that had the ivy on it. I feel bad for him.... he basically has to bathe in a tub of cream to feel better.
