On par with Deicide and God Dethroned in the antichristian department, Vital Remains is a rarity in the music business. Having recorded albums since 1989, none of which were necessarily ‘bestsellers,’ 2003’s ‘Dechristianize’ changed it all. One of the most lauded albums of the year, ‘Dechristianize’ had pounding drum tracks, light and moody guitar solos, and songs averaging roughly 6-7 minutes, giving it ‘death metal epic’ status.
The music alone is worth the buy, but there was certainly another force working at Vital Remains that pushed the album’s sales dramatically: Deicide’s own Glen Benton, working bass-less, focusing solely on blasphemous renderings of his voice in his double layered style many fans have come to appreciate. While many consider Vital Remains a ‘Glen Benton side project,’ there’s no mistaking that this is a band that could thrive without Benton…but who would want that?
This one of the most important death metal albums of all-time and it is one that all death metal heads should have. This also one of the first death metal albums in the early beginning stages of death metal because it was released in 1989. So this album is legendary.
Possessed: Seven Churches - This is an album that is
very special. That reason is because it is an album
that is responsible for the beginning of this genre
of music that we call death metal. Whenever a person
looks and traces the history of music, everything
seems to be sort of a progression, almost like a road
map. This is the case here. Many people have argued
rather this album or Death's Scream Bloody Gore is the
very first death metal album but lets rightly examine
the evidence. This album only came out in 1985 and
Scream Bloody Gore came out in 1987 but yet, Death had
only been around as early as 1983. Even with that, we
still can't know the correct answer. We just have to
review both albums because the poof is in the music.
When someone who has already heard Scream Bloody Gore
picks up this album and listens to it for the first
time, a lot of familiar elements will rise to the
surface. Most of the songs here have elements of early
satanic thrash metal, more like Slayer's Show No Mercy
but they are combined with elements found in Scream
Bloody Gore like double-bass, rolling snare drum
sounds and blast beats as well as early Chuck
Schuldiner-type vocals. The lyrics however are totally
satanic and in the same vein almost as Show No Mercy.
So it can be said that this is more of an early 80's
satanic thrash metal album but yet, it has early death
metal elements. This is what makes this album the sign
that points to death metal but Scream Bloody Gore is
the gate of death metal.
Choice Cuts: The Exorcist, Burning In Hell, Evil
Warriors, Seven Churches, Satan's Curse, Holy Hell,
Twisted Minds and Death Metal
There are bands who have covered songs from
this album. Cannibal Corpse covered The Exorcist. That
version is on the Hammer Smashed Face EP. Vader
covered as song called Death Metal. That version can
be found on Future Of The Past.
Many years ago, this album was out of print
but the album has been re-issued along with other
classic metal albums. They are now in stores. Here's a
list of some of those albums just in case anyone wants
to get a copy.
