As much as I like Alex, and I really do...but Cliff was around before him, and I listened to MetallicA before CC, and well....Cliff Burton is the shit, nobody could play like him, and in my opinion, nobody still can.......Alex, I love you and all, but Cliff is a god. REST IN PEACE I was watching Cliff 'Em All the other day, I'm not a bass player, but I especially love the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls, where Cliff plays that awesome hammer on lick at the end of the intro, and then ends with an insane bend! Imo you can tell that the guitar influenced Cliff's bass playing greatly. I think he's the Jimi Hendrix of bass, just in terms of how unique his playing was. Noone sounded/played like Cliff kind of in the same way that noone sounded/played like Hendrix. Not that Cliff or Jimi are the best technically on their instruments. Cliff Burton R.I.P.

Alex Webster has always been, & always will be my favorite. He's my fucking idol.
When I first started listening to deathmetal, I was a huge CC freak. That's all I could find as far as death goes. Later on I found ways to get new deathmetal & found, CC wasn't the only hot band out there.
I'm still a huge CC fan, but their not the only band that I am totally fanatic for. There are others that play music that burns my blood from the inside.
But no matter who i'm into at the time, I always find Alex Websters bass playing to be the top of the food chain. It's like he's a fucking machine. Pete sandoval (Morbid Angel) as a drummer in my opinion can out drum a fuckinh drum machine. & I feel the same way about Alex Webster. No one could reproduce what he fires out of his bass. Some of his bass solos are uncanny, especially for someone that plays finger style. Most players would need a pick to play as fast as he does w/ his fingers.
He's just the fucking shit. & i'm not just saying that because this is the CC website. I have always felt that way!!!!!!!!

Out of that list I'd have to say Alex. The guys work inspired me to pick up the bass a few years back. Very hard to say who is the "best" bassist, mainly because most bassists have very different styles and techniques. Stu Hamn for his magnificent tapping skills, Victor Wooten for his slap/funk riffs, Jaco Pastorius (R.I.P.) for his work with Weather Report but mainly for his insane understanding of harmonics (see the song "Portrait of Tracy"), Steve Digiorgio for his brilliant flowing lines. I could go on for hours.
