yes real tough, it's hard to compare alex a death metal bassist to les claypool a i quess totally on his own level bassist, and then the insiration for alot of guitar/bass players cliff burton, and glen benton is real tek while singing thats hard man. i say webster for tek and fast playing which is my personal fav. but i go with les for his unique originality. burton was great he was just robbed of life CLIFF BURTON notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif
Vaginal Blood Fart
Yeah, Cliff was robbed! Has anyone seen "Cliff em All"? That rules, his solos were the shit, and he makes For Whom The Bell Tolls sooo wicked live!

Seriously, as far as bassists that have inspired me the most, my vote goes to Rob Trujillo from his days in Suicidal Tendencies and moreso from Infectious Grooves, and Beefcake the Mighty from GWAR.

But of your list, it's gotta be Alex.

Alex is the man. Seriously. Maybe I'm just biased now that I've met him and he's a cool guy, but Alex tears up the bass onstage.

behind all the goofiness Les is truely a god

what about Bwar from marduk? he does some CRAZY FUCKING SHIT, he does sweeps and shit on his bass like a guitar, he plays slap, fingers and pick, sometimes you see him use fingers then he will slap, then grab a pick of his bass,he is very much his own style, very melodic yet brutal,if you havent heard "Heaven Shall Burn" check it out,the bass is simply amazing.

Why does everyone think Cliff Burton? Just cos he's dead! In his young life he can't have gained that much experiece to be the best bassist ever like someone who's been playing forever like Lemmy for example.

john Paul Jones, the Led Zeppelin Bassist was pretty damn good, sure he didn't have the stage presence or as much recognition as most of the other bassists you mentioned but he wrote many of the definative Zeppelin riffs. Black Dog amongst others.

After watching Glen Benton a couple of weeks ago playing his bass, I'd put him on the voting list too. He even sings at the same time making it even harder. Watching him was cool, you should have seen his fingers going.

I love Les Claypool but since I am definitely biased on a lot of CC topics(being they ARE my fav band) but I honestly do enjoy Alex's bass work very much,2nd only to Paul's drumming of course in the whole scheme of the band cool.gif

Billy Gould from Faith No More is a good en.
Sharlee D'Angelo from Arch Enemy is good too. I wouldn't have thought of him but he plays bass on the new Spiritual Beggars album and the bass is too cool for school!

Alex Webster, I know hes NOT the best, but for me as a bass player hes my favorite to watch and try to play like.
He got me into playing bass when I played guitar, I heard his solo for Hammer Smashed Face and then hes short line in Fucked With A Knife and I thought this dude is Badass, now hes my idol.

I was watching Cliff 'Em All the other day, I'm not a bass player, but I especially love the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls, where Cliff plays that awesome hammer on lick at the end of the intro, and then ends with an insane bend! notworthy.gif Imo you can tell that the guitar influenced Cliff's bass playing greatly. I think he's the Jimi Hendrix of bass, just in terms of how unique his playing was. Noone sounded/played like Cliff kind of in the same way that noone sounded/played like Hendrix. Not that Cliff or Jimi are the best technically on their instruments.

Cliff Burton R.I.P.
CannibalDave
Of the bass players listed, Alex Webster fucking destroys them all. He is by far the best on that list, and one of the best in the world.
Revolting Tendencies
Heh, pretty crappy list.

Victor Wooten, Billy Sheehan, John Myung would shit all over those bassists hahaha.
AGENT_ORANGE
Alex
MorticiaN
Tom Ayara should be on the list to.
Cioni
He's called Tom Araya, and he's not that great with bass (I love Slayer, but yeah he isn't that great). I voted Cliff, he's my favourite bass player. Alex is my third favourite, you forgot to add Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) which is my second favourite.
irish hellbringer
of the choices alex webster ....but of all time would be the legend Jaco Pastorious....jazz not metal .inarguably the best ...ever.....created fretless .....harmonics scale was all him...badass god of the four string which....if you like les...or flea they got the idea of slap funk from jaco..died in the 80s drunk tried to get in a santana show was killed by the bouncer(a black belt)he is friggin amazing.dont like much five stringers...but seen les twice...with primus very good...oteil burbridge wipes the ass of his cat with him though and the list goes on........wooten is also da man..and sheehan, fuckin fast and oh yeah where the fuck is STEVE HARRIS i mean jesus talk about bad cliff wished once that he was as good as harris then and the fuckin genie laughed himself to death...again out of the list alex is friggin good as far as fast.and benton also searing...
tomatoefunk
Alex Webster has always been, & always will be my favorite. He's my fucking idol.

When I first started listening to deathmetal, I was a huge CC freak. That's all I could find as far as death goes. Later on I found ways to get new deathmetal & found, CC wasn't the only hot band out there.

I'm still a huge CC fan, but their not the only band that I am totally fanatic for. There are others that play music that burns my blood from the inside.

But no matter who i'm into at the time, I always find Alex Websters bass playing to be the top of the food chain. It's like he's a fucking machine. Pete sandoval (Morbid Angel) as a drummer in my opinion can out drum a fuckinh drum machine. & I feel the same way about Alex Webster. No one could reproduce what he fires out of his bass. Some of his bass solos are uncanny, especially for someone that plays finger style. Most players would need a pick to play as fast as he does w/ his fingers.

He's just the fucking shit. & i'm not just saying that because this is the CC website. I have always felt that way!!!!!!!!

Out of the list, I voted for Alex. He's great, miles ahead of the other guys on the list. Glen Benton sucks on bass from what I've heard, at least the Hoffmans said so.

One very important bassist you have missed is Steve Digiorgio of Death, Sadus, Testament, Control Denied, Iced Earth and thousands of other bands. That man is fucking nuts.

I was suprised to see Les Claypool up on here, what he does is insane! Thats where my vote lies. Tommy The Cat mother fuckers!

Out of that list I'd have to say Alex. The guys work inspired me to pick up the bass a few years back.
Very hard to say who is the "best" bassist, mainly because most bassists have very different styles and techniques. Stu Hamn for his magnificent tapping skills, Victor Wooten for his slap/funk riffs, Jaco Pastorius (R.I.P.) for his work with Weather Report but mainly for his insane understanding of harmonics (see the song "Portrait of Tracy"), Steve Digiorgio for his brilliant flowing lines. I could go on for hours.
