Mutilated1: Greatest Death Metal Song Ever Written (Death Metal Mayhem)

QUOTE (ElizabethBathory @ Mar 14 2010, 03:17 AM)

I would answer "Phobophile" by Cryptopsy.

when i saw the topic title that song was immediately what came to mind, not that I agree with the choice - just i knew it was a matter of time before someone posted it

but i don't agree that song is the greatest and here's why:

it has a piano

and more importantly, it doesn't have a hook

in contrast Hammer Smashed Face has hook after hook, its all kinds of brutal, and its not assed up with atmosphere and pianos

Hammer Smashed Face would be the song I'd be inclined to pick but maybe not, honestly I'm not even sure thats my favorite Cannibal Corpse song

I'm with Joey, I need to think about this for a while and get back to you

interesting topic though

Damn, I'd need to think about an answer to this for months....Phobophile is an excellent choice, but there's so damn many tunes to choose from....

ElizabethBathory: Greatest Death Metal Song Ever Written (Death Metal Mayhem)

Unobjectively, what would you say is the single most perfect death metal song ever made, and why?

I would answer "Phobophile" by Cryptopsy.

This is because it combines relentless, brutal riffing with brilliant technicality, and just keeps topping its own heaviness as it goes on. The sounds Lord Worm produced on this track are downright scary, some of them. Especially the high pitched, murderous "shrieks", for lack of a better word, in the breakdown and outro. Definitely one of my favorite vocal performances ever. The drumming is insane, and the guitar solo is absolutely chaotic. I love the piano intro and Eric's bass lead. For me, Phobophile represents everything good death metal should have and be about.

DeadbyDawn: Jimi Hendrix (Death Metal Mayhem)

I read about this intriguing piece of news in The New York Times, very recently....and I was highly interested in what the Hendrix estate, with the aid of latest technology was upto, right now. I've been searching for in-depth info and listening to a few youtube clips of this "new" album.

Here's a video of Eddie Kramer explaining the story at a gala release party of this latest gem of the Hendrix legacy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0QsTBmPP_A

I'd be awaiting the official release of Valleys of Neptune. And I'd be even more keen to eventually (soon) see the re-release of the two studio albums releases after Jimi had passed away.

DeadbyDawn: Immolation Begin Recording New Album (Death Metal Mayhem)

QUOTE (ElizabethBathory)

Would anyone consider it to be their best album?
In other words, would you recommend it above Dawn of Possession for a listener new to Immolation?

Impossible to tell right now, cos I haven't properly and fully immersed myself in all of this latest Immo disc. But it does sound like a masterclass thus far. But hey, DoP is not even my fave Immo album anyway. Here In After, Close to a World Below and Unholy Cult are my longstanding personal Immo bests. Don't get me wrong, DoP is great, no question, though I'd say Majesty will surpass that, for me. The only one that I didn't love as much as the rest is Harnessing Ruin. Their last one, Shadows in the Light, had by far the best production of any Immo album, and it was a killer disc, all the way. Talking of all this makes me ache to watch Ross Dolan and pals slay onstage, all over again.

I actually prefer Here In After and Shadows In The Light to Dawn. Hell, I probably prefer Closer and Harnessing to Dawn as well...

...but I can't say yet if Majesty is their best to me, only because I haven't absorbed enough of this record yet. It's looking good, though....

First of all, he hadn't released anything in a very long time, and I get very skeptical when I hear all that "coming back to old sound" thing.
I was pleasantly surprised, though. The only thing that bugs me are the vocals - I find them really impressive on his older albums, but this time, at some points, they seem even needless.
I'll need to listen to Belus a few more times in order to really form an opinion about it. Of course, I'd always rather go for the early 1990's stuff, but this definitely wasn't a letdown for me and I don't think it'll be a letdown for most Burzum fans.
